In recent years, with the diversification of data utilization due to technological innovation and the increase in global cross-border data transfer, awareness of the protection of personal information has increased. Since the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was passed in April 2016 and became effective on May 4, 2018, further developments have accelerated and countries around the world are legislating data protection laws affected by the GDPR. In the United States, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) has been enacted and enforced as a comprehensive state privacy law. In this way, data protection laws around the world are changing at a rapid pace, and the impact on the handling of personal information of Japanese companies is not small.
In light of these circumstances, our Data Security Practice Group has decided to hold regular webinars on a quarterly basis, with the theme of the latest trends in data protection laws around the world. In this first session, we will focus on global trends in the last three months. Each video is about 1 to 3 minutes long, which is suitable for practitioners to quickly grasp the latest trends in data protection laws around the world.
This video will explain the latest trends of the revised Personal Information Protection Law in Japanese law, the latest enforcement cases, and the latest developments in the centralization of personal information protection legislation, as the details of the revision are becoming clear with the release of the "Discussion Points for the Development of Cabinet Orders and Regulations Related to the Revised Law (Enhanced Publication Matters)" on October 2020, 10.
