Points of attendance
The U.S. has been strengthening laws and regulations restricting transactions that are not consistent with its own security policy and foreign policy. In recent years, especially against the backdrop of political and economic tensions with China, there has been a series of Congressional legislation as well as Presidential decrees.
Sanctions laws and export controls are just one example of such laws and regulations, but secondary sanctions and re-export controls also seek to restrict transactions conducted outside of the U.S., which has a significant impact not only on companies in countries targeted by the U.S., but also on companies in other countries that do business with those companies.
Japanese companies face a very difficult decision to maintain as much business as possible with countries that have tense relations with the U.S., while at the same time risking losing access to the U.S. market if they violate these laws and regulations.
In this seminar, I will explain the basics of US sanctions law and export regulations and examples of enforcement by US authorities, and then explain the compliance system and the points of risk assessment for establishing and operating this system.
