As multinational companies make strategic choices and focus on their business lines, monetization of legacy intellectual property in exiting businesses has become an important management issue. How to plan and execute licensing of patent portfolios in the U.S., the largest market for patent monetization? While there are many seminars that discuss how to do court cases and IPR, this is one of the few seminars that discusses the key issues that companies face when planning and executing strategies for licensing activities, in a series of three videos. In Part3, I will discuss how to respond to a patent infringement claim, taking into account the legal risk management of the company, based on Responsive and Proactive strategies, and an approach that clearly separates the discussion in negotiations from the fight in litigation.

Hiroyuki Hagiwara
Hiroyuki Hagiwara is a partner in the Litigation Department and based in the firm’s Tokyo office. Mr. Hagiwara offers more than 20 years of experience in cross-border litigations and transactions. Patent infringement litigations, licensing transactions and disputes, arbitrations and investigations are the main focus of his practice. In patent disputes, Mr. Hagiwara has handled wide-ranging subject matters from electronics, software, chemical, pharmaceutical, biologics, semiconductor, telecommunication to automotive.
Clients and independent sources have singled him out as one of the very best in the market to navigate the complex cross-border dispute landscape.
